THE STATUE OF LIBERTY
The Statue
of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the World; French: La Liberté éclairant le
monde) is a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York
Harbor in New York City, in the United States. The copper statue, designed by
Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, a French sculptor, was built by Gustave Eiffel and
dedicated on October 28, 1886. It was a gift to the United States from the
people of France.
The statue
is of a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess, who bears
a torch and a tabula ansata (a tablet evoking the law) upon which is inscribed
the date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. A broken
chain lies at her feet. The statue is an icon of freedom and of the United
States, and was a welcoming sight to immigrants arriving from abroad.
Bartholdi
was inspired by French law professor and politician Édouard René de Laboulaye,
who is said to have commented in 1865 that any monument raised to American
independence would properly be a joint project of the French and American
peoples. He may have been minded to honor the Union victory in the American
Civil War and the end of slavery. Due to the troubled political situation in
France, work on the statue did not commence until the early 1870s. In 1875,
Laboulaye proposed that the French finance the statue and the Americans provide
the site and build the pedestal. Bartholdi completed the head and the
torch-bearing arm before the statue was fully designed, and these pieces were
exhibited for publicity at international expositions.
The
torch-bearing arm was displayed at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in
1876, and in Madison Square Park in Manhattan from 1876 to 1882. Fundraising
proved difficult, especially for the Americans, and by 1885 work on the pedestal
was threatened due to lack of funds. Publisher Joseph Pulitzer of the New York
World started a drive for donations to complete the project that attracted more
than 120,000 contributors, most of whom gave less than a dollar. The statue was
constructed in France, shipped overseas in crates, and assembled on the
completed pedestal on what was then called Bedloe's Island. The statue's
completion was marked by New York's first ticker-tape parade and a dedication
ceremony presided over by President Grover Cleveland.
THANKSGIVING
Thanksgiving is a holiday
celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday in November. It has been
celebrated as a federal holiday every year since 1863, when, during the Civil
War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving
and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens", to be
celebrated on the last Thursday in November. Thanksgiving was also celebrated
nationally in 1789, after a proclamation by George Washington. As a federal and
public holiday in the U.S., Thanksgiving is one of the major holidays of the
year. Together with Christmas and New Year, Thanksgiving is a part of the
broader holiday season.
The event that Americans
commonly call the "First Thanksgiving" was celebrated by the Pilgrims
after their first harvest in the New World in 1621. This feast lasted three
days, and it was attended by 90 Native Americans and 53 Pilgrims. The New
England colonists were accustomed to regularly celebrating
"thanksgivings"—days of prayer thanking God for blessings such as
military victory or the end of a drought.
WHAT WOULD I DO IF I WON THE LOTTERY?
If I won the lottery, I would do so many things. First
of all, I would make a cruise around the Mediterranean. I love travelling above
the sea and I have never tried it. That is one of my dreams. Moreover, if I won
a jackpot prize I would donate a big quantity of money to NGO. I would feel
better if I share my money with people that really need it.
I’m not used to buy lottery very often but I do it
sometimes at Christmas, but unfortunately, I have never been a jackpot winner.
I think that it is very difficult to win the lottery because there are many
people who participate but the only way of not winning the lottery is not
buying it.
With this big amount of money, I would buy a beautiful
house with an individual pool and a nice garden. I would also buy a car and
lots of clothes and shoes. When I bought all my whims, I would help my family
and friends too, because if I win the lottery I wouldn’t be selfish. Moreover
if I am in debt with anything, I will pay it instantly. What I have clear is
that I wouldn’t waste money because there are many people that need it a lot.
On the other hand, I think that winning the lottery
isn’t the answer to our problems or gives us the happiness but quite the
opposite. If you aren’t healthy, you won’t be able to enjoy your whims. In
fact, if you are seriously rich but you can’t make anything because of your
health, you will not be happy although you were plenty of money.
In short, I think that money doesn’t give you the
happiness, but it helps. In some cases a hard disease could be cured with a big
quantity of money. In fact, for me the perfect combination is health, money and
love.
YOUTH OF TODAY
First of all, to my mind it is not necessary to drink or to smoke when
we are with our friends and we want to have a good time. If you are in a good
circle of friends, you can enjoy and laugh and even you do not remember that
alcohol or tobacco exist.
On the one hand, as far as I am concerned, modern teenagers like
drinking and smoking a lot to be happy. It is true that alcohol changes the
personality of the people: it makes disappear the shame and teenagers feel
better by drinking it. In my opinion, alcohol and tobacco can cause terrible
fights because drunken people do not realise what they do and often they become
aggressive.
On the other hand, there are many options to have a good time with your
friends. For example, I like practicing sport with my friends. This is a good
way to share our hobbies by practicing our favourite sports. I often go for a
run with my friends and we always laugh and have a great time together. We also
go cycling around the city and even we go out by roller-skates.
In addition, if you go to a party and a friend gets drunk, we have the
responsibility and we should keep him from drinking more. In that way we cannot
enjoy ourselves because we have to help out our friend. It is true that
sometimes we feel strongly influenced by some friends that like drinking a lot.
Then we get down drinking and we finish worse than we wanted.
To sum up, in my opinion we do not need to drink or to smoke because
there are many ways to have a good time with our friends. I prefer doing sport,
going out to eat or to have dinner, going to the cinema, going shopping...
Moreover, when we go to a party we can have fun by dancing or singing without
thinking in drinking or smoking.
MY FAMILY
My
most admired family member is my mother. She is one of the most important
people in my life. She is the person who has brought up me during all my life.
She is very funny and I always do a lot of things with her, for example, going
shopping, watching series, cooking, etc.
However,
the member of my family I most look like is my father. People often tell us we
are the same person but with different gender. He has green eyes and blond hair
and me too. I have the same chubby cheeks, nose and mouth as him. I also look
like my grandmother; she has the same eyes and hair as my father and me. We
three wear glasses too.
On
the other hand, from my close relatives, the person I most take after in
character is my grandfather. He was self-confident, he had a hard character and
he made snap decision like me. He also had a great sense of humour and was
always telling jokes.
In
addition I have a cousin who is 12 and he look like me. We have the same eyes,
hair, nose, mouth and height. The only difference between us is the age. People
always think we are sisters. We also have the same character and likes but she
takes things more seriously than me. We get along really good.
In
short, I would be like my mother because she is the person in whom I more trust
because she has never disappointed me. But the truth is that the person I most
take after in personality is my grandfather. I think I have inherited some
little things of all the members of my family.
ADVERTISING
First
of all, when we go to the street, we find posters, billboards. When we go on
the bus, we hear very commercial advertising, and when you get home, turn on
the television and advertising.
On
the one hand, advertising has a direct impact on our lives and how we buy
things because we see deep messages, ideas, styles, lifestyles, products, etc.,
that is what we call marketing strategy. It influences us because we all want
the best, we all want to be fashionable and share links with others through
common products or lifestyles.
For
example, when we see a car advert, we are so influenced because we see the
perfect car, with a perfect environment, a perfect driving, etc. But the truth
is not that; when we go to try the car in the real life, we notice that it is
not the perfect car and we can feel disappointed.
On
the other hand, we feel so influenced by the make of products. When we see an
advert about the perfect sneakers from ‘Adidas’, we feel the necessity of
buying the product although you do not need them. The reason for that is
simple: TV adverts are made to persuade us and to try to convince us that we
really need this single product.
In
short, from my point of view advertising has a great power of persuasion. An
advert can create inside you the possibility of buying something you do not
need at all, without being conscious.

HALLOWEEN
What we now know as The night of the witches or Halloween was celebrated
3000 years ago by the Celts. Precisely on October 31, the Celts celebrated the
end of the year with Samhain, a pagan festival. With European immigration to
the United States, mainly Irish Catholics in 1846, came the tradition of
Halloween to America. When we speak about The night of the witches or Halloween
we think in costumes, makeup, party, candy and children; but tradition states
that its celebration was not always festive and cheerful, and the rites that
were practiced during the night had a purifying and religious character.
When Emperor Constantine decreed that the inhabitants of his empire had to
convert to Christianity, many pagan rites were introduced. In this way the
festival of Samhain was infiltrated.
By the eighth century, the Christian Church became the 1st of November
as All Saints Day to honor all the saints who do not have a particular day of
celebration. Over the years, these festivals were combined, and people called
it as "All hallowmas" (the mass of all the saints, holy people) to
All Saints Day. The night before became known as "All Hallows Eve"
(Eve of All Saints Day). Later, his name became Halloween.
