OUR ENVIRONMENT

Today human beings are the ones who have most of the responsibility for climate change. Our activities do levels of greenhouse gases increase in the atmosphere. For this reason, air pollution is one of the most important problems of our environment. Young people are not really concerned with the protection of our nature. We do not realise that saving our planet is in our hands and depend only on our attitude.
On the one hand we do not think about the importance of taking care of our environment. For example, when we are going to buy a product, we hardly ever think if it is really necessary for or not, and in some occasion they could be pollution products. If we think about that, we will be saving money and helping the nature at the same time. This is only a little example about our diary activities which damage a lot and causes energy problems, between other.
On the other hand, according to this topic I think that it is important to focus on climate change. The temperature increase on the planet, has led to several significant changes like more rainfall, high summer temperatures, coldest winters, between others. If we do not take in account this situation and try to solve the problem, our planet will be destroyed too soon.
Talking about me and my family and friends, we try to do our best to improve the environment. Some of our environmental actions are turning off the light and electric devices when we are not using them, close the tap when we are washing the plates or our teeth, using rechargeable batteries, using hot water only if necessary, using public transport because vehicles exhaust fumes are pollutant, not wasting paper and carton items or separating the trash.

In short, we all should realise that our planet is suffering a serious problem and among all of us try to take care of this to create a better world. In this way, we could enjoy much more time our planet and environment.

The purpose of education

According to Noam Chomski, there are two types of education. The first kind of education is related to the Enlightenment. It consists in the highest goal in life to inquire and create, search the riches of the past, try to internalize and help people how to learn on their own, the learner is you. The second kind of education is related to Indoctrination. From childhood young people have to be placed into a framework where they will follow orders that are quite explicit. Schools and universities had to increase measures toward more control, imposing  more debt to capture students into conformity.

By one side, when Noam Chomski talks about technology in education , he says that tech changes now come no where near the tech advances of a century ago. Technology is neutral. The information should be contrasted. In addition, You cannot expect someone to become a biologist by looking through the Internet so you have to be able to evaluate, interpret and understand.

By the other side, he says that if there is not a lively cultural and educational system which is geared toward encouraging creative exploration, independence of thought, willingness to cross frontiers, challenge accepted beliefs, you are not going to get the technology that is going to produce economic gain, not that this is the prime purpose of education. Sometimes a student studies very hard for a test and he does it very well, but the truth is that he or she does not understand nothing about the topic of the test. We have all had the experience of doing a test and forgetting everything two weeks later.

In short, teaching should be inspiring students to discover on their own, to challenge if they don't agree, to look for alternatives if they think there are better ones, etc. Education is really aimed at helping students get to the point where they can learn on their own because that is what you are going to do during your life, not just absorb materials given to you by the outside, and repeat it.

Talking about my future

When I finish my Degree in English Studies, I want to become an English teacher. First of all, I would like going to England and practising the language. I want to stay there some years.  Then when I return, I want to do oppositions and obtain a job in a high school or a college. This is my first option, but I would like working in other places if possible in today’s job market.
On the one hand, to become a teacher it is necessary to obtain some important skills. You need to be conscious that you will work with students, and it is a very important role. To turn professional, it is essential to practice and gain experience before working. For example, if I want to be a teacher, I could start by teaching children giving private lessons at home. In this way, I would see if I like the job or not and also make progress at it.
On the other hand, I have to improve on some points to become professional. I have to get used to speak in public. Working as a teacher requires be in front of a lot of people and speak all the time. That is one of my weak points. I will also have to get some basic skills and techniques to teach children and teenagers because it is not an easy profession. I hope it does not take a long time to me to master everything.
In addition, while I study and prepare for the future, I want to try some other jobs because perhaps I change my opinion. It is possible that I like other different job and then all my thoughts of future change too.
In short, as I have said before, my first professional option is becoming a teacher but I will not reject some other possible opportunities that maybe could be better for me. But I am sure that I will work in something I like doing because if not, I will never be happy with myself.

Education

Nowadays’ education has nothing to do with the education fixed many years ago. Parents today are too concerned, leading them to give too much importance to the problem and do not always choose the right solution.
On the one hand kids today are not like before, now they misbehave a lot. There are many children who do not obey their parents and they are so naughty. Parents have the fault, because they do not impose any rules in their homes and they allow their children to do whatever they want, being right or wrong. When they want to correct their behavior, it is so late because they do not know what authority is.
On the other hand, I think that teachers have a great responsibility in children, because they spend much time at school, but the truth is that the most important role in education are the parents. Infant teachers have to teach kids basic skills when they make a start in schools. They provide training to get their best and get all the aims they want. Children also have to make an effort to obtain their qualification, but they need to be helped by experts such as teachers.
In order to overcome these problems there are some measures which could help. At first, parents should impose children what is right and what is wrong, if they do not obey, they will be punished. In this way, children will understand that what he or she has done must not be repeated again. The most important thing in education is the authority; if parents lose it, they will not be able to educate their kids.

In short, educating children is not an easy role. In my opinion the greatest responsibility lies with the parents but teachers have to participate too. At home, kids should be taught basic rules to be a good person. However, at schools, they should be taught both academically and personally. I could not say which of the two roles is the most important and necessary.

Nowadays technology

Using Web sites is among the most common activity of today's children and teenegers. Social media have become prominent parts of life for many young people today. Most people engage with social media without stopping to think what the effects are on our lives, whether positive or negative.
On the one hand, some advantages of social media are that we can keep in contact with our friends or relatives which we cannot see them frequently. Parents can ask their children where they are or telling them something important in a moment. It is an easy and cheap way to communicate with whoever you want. With the social network Facebook you are informed of all current news which are happening around the world.
On the other hand, social media have also some disadvantages. Some people do not control the time they are using their mobile phones. Many people are dependent on their telephones and they are all day connected to the Internet. It can lead to addiction. One of the worst disadvantages is that people lay a lot through the chats; they take advantage that they are behind a screen and nobody can see them. In addition, some people have a close relation and confidence through the Internet and then when they are face to face, they are not able to have a conversation because of the shame.

To sum up, I think that using the Internet and the new generation gadgets is a good idea if they are used in a moderate way. We should not abuse of them and control the time we spend connected and the people we speak to.  In my opinion, everything in excess is not good.

III. Problems it causes.
A.Pollution
B. Harms

IV. Investigation.
A. Science
B. Astronauts

V. In short, space debris causes good and bad things. They can pollute the Earth and also cause damages to humans and their environment. But they can be investigated by scientists and they can discover new things about the space.

THE STATUE OF LIBERTY

The Statue of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the World; French: La Liberté éclairant le monde) is a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York Harbor in New York City, in the United States. The copper statue, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, a French sculptor, was built by Gustave Eiffel and dedicated on October 28, 1886. It was a gift to the United States from the people of France.

The statue is of a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess, who bears a torch and a tabula ansata (a tablet evoking the law) upon which is inscribed the date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. A broken chain lies at her feet. The statue is an icon of freedom and of the United States, and was a welcoming sight to immigrants arriving from abroad.

Bartholdi was inspired by French law professor and politician Édouard René de Laboulaye, who is said to have commented in 1865 that any monument raised to American independence would properly be a joint project of the French and American peoples. He may have been minded to honor the Union victory in the American Civil War and the end of slavery. Due to the troubled political situation in France, work on the statue did not commence until the early 1870s. In 1875, Laboulaye proposed that the French finance the statue and the Americans provide the site and build the pedestal. Bartholdi completed the head and the torch-bearing arm before the statue was fully designed, and these pieces were exhibited for publicity at international expositions.

The torch-bearing arm was displayed at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876, and in Madison Square Park in Manhattan from 1876 to 1882. Fundraising proved difficult, especially for the Americans, and by 1885 work on the pedestal was threatened due to lack of funds. Publisher Joseph Pulitzer of the New York World started a drive for donations to complete the project that attracted more than 120,000 contributors, most of whom gave less than a dollar. The statue was constructed in France, shipped overseas in crates, and assembled on the completed pedestal on what was then called Bedloe's Island. The statue's completion was marked by New York's first ticker-tape parade and a dedication ceremony presided over by President Grover Cleveland.

THANKSGIVING

Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday in November. It has been celebrated as a federal holiday every year since 1863, when, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens", to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November. Thanksgiving was also celebrated nationally in 1789, after a proclamation by George Washington. As a federal and public holiday in the U.S., Thanksgiving is one of the major holidays of the year. Together with Christmas and New Year, Thanksgiving is a part of the broader holiday season.

The event that Americans commonly call the "First Thanksgiving" was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in 1621. This feast lasted three days, and it was attended by 90 Native Americans and 53 Pilgrims. The New England colonists were accustomed to regularly celebrating "thanksgivings"—days of prayer thanking God for blessings such as military victory or the end of a drought.

WHAT WOULD I DO IF I WON THE LOTTERY?

If I won the lottery, I would do so many things. First of all, I would make a cruise around the Mediterranean. I love travelling above the sea and I have never tried it. That is one of my dreams. Moreover, if I won a jackpot prize I would donate a big quantity of money to NGO. I would feel better if I share my money with people that really need it.
I’m not used to buy lottery very often but I do it sometimes at Christmas, but unfortunately, I have never been a jackpot winner. I think that it is very difficult to win the lottery because there are many people who participate but the only way of not winning the lottery is not buying it.
With this big amount of money, I would buy a beautiful house with an individual pool and a nice garden. I would also buy a car and lots of clothes and shoes. When I bought all my whims, I would help my family and friends too, because if I win the lottery I wouldn’t be selfish. Moreover if I am in debt with anything, I will pay it instantly. What I have clear is that I wouldn’t waste money because there are many people that need it a lot.
On the other hand, I think that winning the lottery isn’t the answer to our problems or gives us the happiness but quite the opposite. If you aren’t healthy, you won’t be able to enjoy your whims. In fact, if you are seriously rich but you can’t make anything because of your health, you will not be happy although you were plenty of money.

In short, I think that money doesn’t give you the happiness, but it helps. In some cases a hard disease could be cured with a big quantity of money. In fact, for me the perfect combination is health, money and love.

YOUTH OF TODAY

First of all, to my mind it is not necessary to drink or to smoke when we are with our friends and we want to have a good time. If you are in a good circle of friends, you can enjoy and laugh and even you do not remember that alcohol or tobacco exist.
On the one hand, as far as I am concerned, modern teenagers like drinking and smoking a lot to be happy. It is true that alcohol changes the personality of the people: it makes disappear the shame and teenagers feel better by drinking it. In my opinion, alcohol and tobacco can cause terrible fights because drunken people do not realise what they do and often they become aggressive.
On the other hand, there are many options to have a good time with your friends. For example, I like practicing sport with my friends. This is a good way to share our hobbies by practicing our favourite sports. I often go for a run with my friends and we always laugh and have a great time together. We also go cycling around the city and even we go out by roller-skates.
In addition, if you go to a party and a friend gets drunk, we have the responsibility and we should keep him from drinking more. In that way we cannot enjoy ourselves because we have to help out our friend. It is true that sometimes we feel strongly influenced by some friends that like drinking a lot. Then we get down drinking and we finish worse than we wanted.

To sum up, in my opinion we do not need to drink or to smoke because there are many ways to have a good time with our friends. I prefer doing sport, going out to eat or to have dinner, going to the cinema, going shopping... Moreover, when we go to a party we can have fun by dancing or singing without thinking in drinking or smoking.

MY FAMILY

My most admired family member is my mother. She is one of the most important people in my life. She is the person who has brought up me during all my life. She is very funny and I always do a lot of things with her, for example, going shopping, watching series, cooking, etc.
However, the member of my family I most look like is my father. People often tell us we are the same person but with different gender. He has green eyes and blond hair and me too. I have the same chubby cheeks, nose and mouth as him. I also look like my grandmother; she has the same eyes and hair as my father and me. We three wear glasses too.
On the other hand, from my close relatives, the person I most take after in character is my grandfather. He was self-confident, he had a hard character and he made snap decision like me. He also had a great sense of humour and was always telling jokes.
In addition I have a cousin who is 12 and he look like me. We have the same eyes, hair, nose, mouth and height. The only difference between us is the age. People always think we are sisters. We also have the same character and likes but she takes things more seriously than me. We get along really good.

In short, I would be like my mother because she is the person in whom I more trust because she has never disappointed me. But the truth is that the person I most take after in personality is my grandfather. I think I have inherited some little things of all the members of my family.

ADVERTISING

First of all, when we go to the street, we find posters, billboards. When we go on the bus, we hear very commercial advertising, and when you get home, turn on the television and advertising.
On the one hand, advertising has a direct impact on our lives and how we buy things because we see deep messages, ideas, styles, lifestyles, products, etc., that is what we call marketing strategy. It influences us because we all want the best, we all want to be fashionable and share links with others through common products or lifestyles.
For example, when we see a car advert, we are so influenced because we see the perfect car, with a perfect environment, a perfect driving, etc. But the truth is not that; when we go to try the car in the real life, we notice that it is not the perfect car and we can feel disappointed.
On the other hand, we feel so influenced by the make of products. When we see an advert about the perfect sneakers from ‘Adidas’, we feel the necessity of buying the product although you do not need them. The reason for that is simple: TV adverts are made to persuade us and to try to convince us that we really need this single product.

In short, from my point of view advertising has a great power of persuasion. An advert can create inside you the possibility of buying something you do not need at all, without being conscious.

HALLOWEEN

What we now know as The night of the witches or Halloween was celebrated 3000 years ago by the Celts. Precisely on October 31, the Celts celebrated the end of the year with Samhain, a pagan festival. With European immigration to the United States, mainly Irish Catholics in 1846, came the tradition of Halloween to America. When we speak about The night of the witches or Halloween we think in costumes, makeup, party, candy and children; but tradition states that its celebration was not always festive and cheerful, and the rites that were practiced during the night had a purifying and religious character.

When Emperor Constantine decreed that the inhabitants of his empire had to convert to Christianity, many pagan rites were introduced. In this way the festival of Samhain  was infiltrated.

By the eighth century, the Christian Church became the 1st of November as All Saints Day to honor all the saints who do not have a particular day of celebration. Over the years, these festivals were combined, and people called it as "All hallowmas" (the mass of all the saints, holy people) to All Saints Day. The night before became known as "All Hallows Eve" (Eve of All Saints Day). Later, his name became Halloween.

MAN ON THE EDGE

I think that the best ending to this chapter would be that the wife of the man appeared in the hotel. She could convince him not to jump from the balcony. In this way, it is possible that the man do not want to die because he is frustrated because of the problems whith his wife. They had a hard discussion and he decided to commit suicide. In my opinion, his wife is the only person who could solve it, so the best ending would be that she told him that that is not a good option and he finally would accept and he does not wanted to die. Therefore we would have a happy ending.

PROBLEM/SOLUTION COMPOSITION

I am going to explain why poverty exists. Today there are many countries which suffer poverty. Lots of children die every day because their families are so poor and they can not feed them. The main place where poverty exists is Africa. Ethiopia is a very poor country. People do not have any drinkable water to drink. Although there are some charities which give help to the third world, this is not enough.

I think that the best idea to solve these problems is awareness all people and try to help these people who are suffering poverty. On the other hand, we have to solve the problem whith drinkable water and food. In this way, we could feel better ourselves and help people who need it. I think that the problem is that we are too selfish and it is not comfortable to help people.

COMPARATIVE AND CONTRAST PARAGRAPH

Rostropovich and Sex Pistols are very different but they have some things in common too. Rostropovich is an expert in clasical music. In the image, he is playing the cello. In addition, he is wearing a shirt and a tie; he dresses very elegant clothes. He isn't young, he is a mid-age man. He is very concentrated and calmed. On the other hand, the other two boys are experts in punk music. They are dressing casual clothing. They are young people so they are singing very excitated, they look like they were crazy. One of them is singing while the other is playing the guitar. In conclusion, both images represent musicians and they are famous and earn money thanks to their job, but they play and sing very different styles.

EXPERIENCES

I have never had an umpleasant experience but I have suffered from scary situations as for example a road accident or the death of a relative.
Although hard experiences are difficult to forget, I have always managed to survive, thanks to my good health not only physically but also mentally and to my courage.
In addition, I'm usually ready to overcome the hard times in my daily time, any event can become a terrible experience.
However, people are strong enough to face and learn from the good and bad experiences. It's clear that suffering isn't good, on the other hand, as everybody knows there are many lucky people in the world who haven't had shocking experiences.

UNCONDITIONAL BASIC INCOME

Unconditional basic income should be received by every adult in the world. This is a human right, every person have to earn a quantity of money to cover the main expenses every month. The state have to avoid that anyone couldn't live because she or he doesn't have money to eat, drink or dress. This money have to be paid independently of the employment situation. In this way, everyone had a little quantity of money to subsist and there wouldn't be any poverty.

ZOOS. OPINION

First of all, when we think about a zoo, we imagine that there are beautiful animals of all the species. But, are zoos a good place for them? I don’t think so.
On the one hand, in zoos there is a huge breed animal and some zookeepers are very rude with them. They aren’t patient so they treat animals in an inadequate way. For that reason, the animals can become aggressive with the people which are visiting and watching them. Because of this behavior, zookeepers punish the animals and are cruel with them. On the other hand, I think that endangered animals would be better if they were in their birthplace. The problem is that because of habitat destruction many species are endangered. Many studies have demonstrated that endangered animals wouldn’t disappear if they were in their own habitat and environment.
In my opinion, zoos should be for only a few animals. For example, a polar bear must be living in Antarctica and not in a zoo. Global warming is also a reason why this species is endangered. If these animals are in a zoo, they don’t feel comfortable because they aren’t in their own habitat so they look sad and they aren’t receptive to people who go to see them.

PEER RESPONSE

PEER RESPONSE FOR ÁNGELA CAMPOY VALVERDE
BY: ANDREA EGIDOS GARCÍA

Dear Ángela, I'm going to start talking about your topic sentence: I think that it is a good topic sentence because it is the main idea and from this you have written the supporting sentences. In relation to the supporting sentences I think that are good because there is a diversity of arguments. In my opinion the concluding sentence isn't bad because it doesn't  give new ideas, but I think that it isn't too striking. For me a concluding sentence must impact readers. The extension of the text is correct, in that a good paragraph must have approximately among five and ten lines. In general I think you have done a good work!

DESCRIBE SOMEONE

I want to describe my mother because she is one of the most important people in my life. She is the person who has taken care of me during all my life. She is very funny and I always do a lot of things with her, for example, going shopping, watching series, cooking, etc. We tell the other all our things and problems and she gives me always good advices and helps me a lot. I love how my mum cooks although I'm trying to cook as her. We do delicious cakes, muffins and biscuits, between other things. In short, my mum is the person in whom I trust more because she has never disappointed me.

Extreme sports

It is thought that extreme sports are dangerous but as far as I'm concerned, I think it is a matter of courage. Practicing sports gives you the oportunity not only to get a goal, but also to keep fit. Most people face the daily problems as if they were practicing a dangerous sport. I stopped practicing these dangerous sports because I wasn't strong enough to bear the tiredness. Although I like them, it doesn't make sense to join if you are afraid of heights or depths, besides, neither I have time enough to join a sport center nor money enough to afford it.

Guernica, Picasso

This picture created by the painter Pablo Picasso represents Bombing of Guernica. In the picture we can see the pain and sadness represented by the drawings of the characters. Picasso resigns the colour so as to acentuate the drama. If we look the picture carefully, we can see  desesperate women screaming in pain. We can see also some animals, like a horse, a bird or a bull. In my opinion, all the characters represent a feeling. For example, the women represents the desesperation, the horse represents the inocence, the bull represents the strength and the bird represents the weakness. In short, with this picture Picasso wanted to express the pain and the suffering that people felt when Bombing of Guernica took place.

Covadonga Lakes

The best place I’ve visited is Covadonga Lakes. This is a place located in Asturias. It is composed by two beautiful lakes, Enol Lake and Ercina Lake. They are situated in Cangas de Onís, a cute and small village in the mountains.
To get there, you have to go by bus and it isn’t free. The way to the lakes is very difficult and dangerous. I scared a lot when I was in the bus and I wanted to go back. There are many high ravines and I was fear of falling down. Although I was so scared, I don’t regret having gone. Covadonga Lakes are an amazing scenery.
There were also cows on the field and I could take some funny photos with them. The field was so green and there was a lot of vegetation. When I was there it was so cold because it was so high and in the north of the country so I had to take a coat.
When you are on Enol Lake, you have to go up a lot of stairs to go to Ercina Lake. At first, I didn’t want to go up because I was so tired and I thought that the other lake was like the other. But fortunately my family convinced me and I went. Now I can say it was worth it, it was incredible!

In short, I invite you to go to Covadonga Lakes if you have never gone because they are wonderful and if you go you will want to repeat the experience. I’m sure that I will return.

Poem: "Fear"

Fear of loving
Fear of hating
Fear of dieing
Fear of living
Fear of darnkness
Fear of being alone
Fear of being poor
Fear of terror films
Fear of speaking in public
Fear of storms
Fear of losing someone I love
Fear having an illness
Fear of being guilty
Fear of doing something wrong
Fear of getting losed
Fear of being anxious
Fear of not being legal
Fear this day will end badly
Fear of waking up to find I'm not the same
Fear of not loving and fear of hating
Fear of a war
Fear of running out of money
Fear of the night
I've said that.
